How to resolve conflict with your dentist

When visiting your local dentist, matters of disagreements can arise especially when it comes to expensive treatments. If you are not happy with the results of the procedures, the first thing you should do is it to speak to your dentist directly. More often than not problems can be easily resolved in this manner. The dentist usually is willing to accommodate your concerns. If you have questions about the treatment, the dentist can explain to you why it might be needed and give you several options to treat the problem.

If the problem is a billing issue, it is best to speak to the person in charge of the office billing department. The dentist is usually too busy treating other patients and leaves that part of the business to the office manager. Whenever you go for to the dental office for procedures, always obtain an itemized bill no matter how small or routine the procedure it. Ask them to include the dental code because each dental procedure has a specific dental code assigned by the American Dental Association (ADA). Once you have the bill in hand contact your dental insurance or dental plan so they can assist you in going over the bill to make sure you were properly charged for each procedure.

If you strongly feel that the dental office has not tried to resolve the matter to their most utmost ability, contact your local Better Business Bureau and inquire if there have been any complaints lodged against the dental office in the recent past.  You can fill out a complaint form which they usually try to resolve within 30 days of submission.  Also submit a letter to the state’s local dental association so they can to try to reach a solution using an impartial peer review system by mediation.
