All American Summer Road Trips – Must Sees + Best Places to Visit

East Coast – I95 

East coast road trips are easy. Just jump on I95 which stretches from Maine to Florida, cutting through cities like Boston, New York, Philly, Baltimore, Washington DC, Savannah, and Miami. Here are just a few spots worth stopping for:

  • Mystic Seaport, Mystic, CT – This quaint maritime village is a fun family destination. Mystic is home to many attractions including a fleet of amazing tall ships like the Charles W. Morgan, first launched in 1841, it’s the oldest commercial vessel still afloat.
  • Inner Harbor, Baltimore, MD – Museums, nightlife, shopping and restaurants all within walking distance makes the Inner Harbor a perfect place for couples and families. One of the most popular Inner Harbor attractions is the National Aquarium, housing over 17,000 creatures in naturalistic exhibits like the walk-through rainforest.
  • Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, GA – It might seem strange to suggest a cemetery as a must see, but Bonaventure is like no other. Older kids will love the haunted vibe as they explore the sculpture gardens with loads of Spanish moss creeping overhead. 20 minutes east of I95, it’s a great place to stretch your legs during a long ride.

Pacific Coast – Route 1

Pacific coast scenery is one reason to hit the road between Seattle and San Diego. Breathtaking ocean views, beaches, forests and mountains are situated along this 1650 mile stretch. Although the ride itself is beautiful, you won’t want to miss a few of these great spots:

  • Downtown Portland, OR – Home to over 600 food carts, a wide variety of restaurants and more breweries than any other city on earth, Portland is a haven for foodies and beer lovers. Couples can explore on their own or join one of the many tasting tours the city has to offer.
  • Napa Valley, CA – No better wine lover’s getaway than touring the outstanding wineries of Napa Valley. On Highway 29 you’ll find Domaine Chandon, Robert Mondavi, Beaulieu Vineyards to name a few. The Calistoga wine trail will take you to Chateau Montelena, Vincent Arroyo Winery and Zahitila Vineyards among others. Downtown Napa has many B&B’s like the charming Blackbird Inn, making it a perfect trip for couples.
  • San Elijo State Beach, Cardiff, CA – Yes. Camping on the beach is as awesome as it sounds. Set up for RV’s and tents, the campgrounds have picnic tables, fire pits and grills. If you don’t want to cook, there’s a great taco stand just steps away. Bike, skateboard, surf, swim or relax, glamping at San Elijo is fun for all ages.

America’s most iconic road trip path spans 2,450 miles across eight states, starting in Chicago and ending in Los Angeles. You’re sure to be entertained by the fun, kitschy and historic Americana along this road.

  • Cozy Dog Drive In, Springfield, IL – Stop in for a famous corn dog at this throwback restaurant located in Lincoln’s hometown.
  • Meramec Caverns, Stanton, MO – This destination is fun for all ages. Pan for gold, ride the zip line, float down the Meramec River in a canoe, and take a tour of the largest cave in Missouri.
  • Wigwam Motel, Rialto, CA – A piece of Route 66 history! Your kids will never forget spending the night in a 30 foot high cement teepee!
