The new school year is on the horizon. For a smooth transition from vacation mode to the classroom, plan ahead and make sure you get an A+ in Back-to-School 101.

Update your child’s shot records

Every state has rules for required immunizations. Although there are exceptions for those who choose not to vaccinate because of religious or philosophical reasons, this needs to be cleared with your child’s school. Clearance paperwork is often required by the state.  Most children have most of their vaccines by age 5. However, boosters or additional shots are necessary at certain ages, so make sure your children are up-to-date on these shots. If your child has not had their annual physical, now is a good time to get it scheduled.

For those who have no health insurance, there are programs that offer low- or no-cost vaccinations. Check the resources in your community by doing a web search, or by asking your child’s school.

Get an eye exam

Vision is key to learning, and your child’s eyes should be in the best shape when school starts. Most children do not complain or even realize they are having trouble seeing, so it’s up to you to spot signs of vision problems. This can include:

  1. squinting
  2. frequent headaches
  3. skipping over words when reading
  4. not being able to see the board
  5. sitting too close to the TV
  6. putting the phone or tablet too close to one’s face

If you notice these signs, do not hesitate to make an appointment with the optometrist. In fact, it is best to get your child’s eyes checked before school starts to ensure he or she has no trouble when it’s time to hit the books.

Stock up on school supplies

Most states have a sales tax holiday. This could be the best time to hit the stores to get backpacks, notebooks, pens, paper, crayons, markers, folders and other essential school supplies. This also is a great time to save on clothing items including school uniforms, underwear and socks.

For students in college, don’t forget to add dorm or apartment must-haves to the list. These include:

  1. bed sheets
  2. kitchen utensils
  3. dishes
  4. hangers
  5. toiletries

Many students also are tech-savvy, so make them look forward to the new school year with new gadgets such as the latest phones, laptops or tablets. These items can also ensure your child has a way to keep in touch when away from home.DentalSave Blog |Back To School Checklist

Set a schedule

Many students get away with staying up past their bedtime during the summer. The few weeks before school starts is the best time to set curfews and bedtimes again. When children get enough sleep, they are refreshed, well-rested and ready to face the day.

Setting a schedule also includes getting organized with the flurry of activities that often comes with the school year. There will be sports, extracurricular activities and other social events that might require adjustments to a parent or babysitter’s schedule. Make sure these are set in advance to avoid unwanted stress.

Whether you are a parent, grandparent, student or guardian, making a list and getting organized can make a world of difference when preparing for the back-to-school grind.
