DMD vs DDS: Is there a difference?
What is the difference between DMD and DDS? Why is it they have two types of degrees? These acronyms make it sound confusing to the general public. First of all, DMD stands for Doctor of Dental Medicine and DDS stands for Doctor of Dental Surgery. And folks, there’s no difference between the two degrees. They have the same curriculum required by the American Dental Association and they’re both able to practice general dentistry. Neither degree is better than the other. It’s the dental school who chooses which degree is awarded to their students.
Now in order to become a specialist in a specific field of dentistry, an additional post graduate training is needed in their respective dental fields.
Whew!
