Flouride Treatment
What is fluoride?
Food debris that is left in the mouth usually creates plaque and if not removed encourages bacteria from forming. The bacteria then create acids that destroy tooth enamel. Fluoride is one of the naturally occurring mineral in nature that helps keep the enamel layer of your teeth intact. It helps remineralize damaged tooth enamel and undo signs of early decay.
Fluoride is naturally found in foods and in water in low level of concentrations. However many cities in the United States have added this mineral to their drinking water system as a health measure for decreasing the rate of cavities in its population. This system is regulated by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) because excess fluoride has been known to cause bone problems and discoloration of the teeth.
Fluoride can also be found toothpaste and mouth rinses in low concentrations. For stronger ones then you’ll have to go the dentist. Fluoride at the dental office is usually applied in the form of a gel, foam, or varnish. Gels and foams are placed in a teeth tray and applied to the teeth for a few minutes. Varnishes are directly painted onto the teeth. Fluoride treatment is usually done after a dental cleaning to maximize its effects.
