How to Maintain Your Toothbrush

Brushing your teeth twice a day along with proper flossing prevents a myriad of health problems.  Always remember that you need to keep your toothbrush clean as much as possible to prevent developing oral problems.  The American Dental Association (ADA) has several recommendations on how to achieve that.

  1. You should replace your toothbrush every 3 to 4 months.  Not only because the toothbrush can become frayed but toothbrushit can also have collected bacteria that is unseen by the naked eye.
  2. Do not cover the head of the toothbrush.  Leave it out to air dry.  Moisture encourages growth of bacteria.
  3. Make sure to thoroughly wash your toothbrush to get rid of any leftover toothpaste.
  4. Do not share toothbrushes with anyone.  Sharing can lead to a higher incidence of infections.  Bacteria can live for quite awhile even when exposed to air.

Happy brushing!
