General dentists usually do not perform root canals so when you need to have one done especially when it involves a molar,  they will refer you to an Endodontist.  If you’ve never heard of an Endodontist you may be questioning who they are. They are basically root canal specialist; they do additional schooling after dental school and receive further training in order to be proficient in dealing with typical and complicated root canal cases.  If you’re having your root canal done by your general dentist you shouldn’t be alarmed. All dentist licensed in the United States are trained to perform endodontic procedures.  The decision of whether your general dentist performs a root canal is based on his/her comfort level in doing the procedure.

As with any specialist in any field, an Endodontist will charge higher for the procedure compared to a general dentist.  If your root canal is a simple problem and can be taken care by your general dentist, then it would be more cost effective if you decide to let him/her perform the procedure.  It’ll save you time and money because your general dentist is also usually the one you go to for the final restoration procedure.  If you are in doubt, then it’s always best to get a second opinion.
