The Power of Smiling More

The Power of Smiling More

It’s always great to see a smile from other people. It makes you feel welcome and perhaps feeling more like smiling yourself. Turns out, there is now scientific evidence to show that smiling is not only pleasant to see, but also good for you on several levels. Ron Gutman gave a recent talk at a TED conference on the effects of a smile, both on the giver and receiver. Smiling more is great for you and there’s now proof. Watch the TED Talk Below.

A natural reflection

  • Babies are born smiling, and there seems to be evidence of babies smiling in the womb before they are born.
  • Smiling is a reflection of a feeling of well being or joy or even happiness.
  • Children smile 400 times a day, but adults do so only about 30 times a day.

Predicting success

A long term study was done that predicted future success based on smiling. Scientists studied yearbook photos, as well as pictures on baseball cards. Based on the smiles researchers were able to predict future success. One of the smiling faces in that study was high school student Barak Obama.

People who smile more are a predictor of things like:

  • How long, or how successful, marriages will be
  • How students will do on standardized tests
  • How successful they will be in the future in general.
  • Even length of life. Players smiling in pictures on baseball cards lived longer than those who did not have a smile. A smaller smile ended up somewhere in between.

There were some other interesting findings about smiling from various studies.

  • It is hard to frown while looking at someone who is smiling.
  • Smiling is contagious
  • It is hard to tell if a smile is real or fake if you cannot smile yourself
  • Smiles make you feel better, reinforcing the good feeling that made you smile to start with.
  • Since you feel better, you will think more clearly too.
  • Reduces stress and blood pressure.
  • You are perceived as more likable and confident by others.

The results are overwhelming that smiling is a good thing. It is good for you and it has a good effect on those around you. It has the same benefits as eating chocolate, scientists say. Smiling has the edge because it has no calories or sugar content.  It increases the level of the feel good chemical dopamine, as well as other chemicals that increase one’s sense of well being. Smiling also reduces stress and can reduce blood pressure.

There are a lot of benefits to this special facial expression, but sometimes you may not feel like it. There are a lot of good reasons to smile though if you think about it. If you are alive, that is better than being dead, so there is just one reason to smile.Signing up for a Dentalsave plan can also be a reason to smile because you save a lot of money that way, knowing the price before you go to the dentist.

Why You Should Add Student Dental Plans to Your College List

Why You Should Add Student Dental Plans to Your College List

Sending your child off to college is a big step to say the least. From packing to organizing classes and saying goodbye, it’s a stressful time in everyone’s lives! The good news though, is that by spending a little extra time planning before the big day you could minimize undue stress in the long run quite easily! Student dental plans may not be at the top of your to-do list right now, but they should be seriously considered. While ObamaCare has become a massive consumer trend and insurance plans are growing more and more important by the day, many young adults and parents-alike overlook the fact that most insurance plans do not include dental coverage. Now that may not seem to be incredibly important when compared to purchasing (and filling) a mini fridge, twin XL sheets and so forth, but if you don’t take care of your dental coverage now, it could easily become a problem later! College is hard enough as it is, so why not do yourself and your child a favor and simplify the process while you still can?

We all want our children to take the best possible care of themselves particularly when they are away from home and we can’t be there for them! Unfortunately, though if you don’t have dental coverage, it’s much more likely that you’ll begin to neglect your oral health! And we all know how that goes, a tiny toothache that could have been filled easily and cheaply gets ignored and put on the back burner until it’s so painful it must be dealt with and by that time? It’s definitely not cheap anymore. That is why you should consider student dental plans or a discount dental plan for your family.

Celebrating the 96th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

Celebrating the 96th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment

Living in this day and age, people of every age, race, creed, and sex can enjoy equal rights. We as people tend to take for granted these privileges by abusing them at times and in certain situations. This great nation today wasn’t as liberal as it was many moons ago and people had to fight extremely hard for the very same privileges people have at the present moment, including women’s right to vote. This is why the 19th Amendment should be celebrated.

On August 18th of 1920, a right known as woman suffrage was ratified as the 19th Amendment of the United States. This act gave women the right to vote for the very first time. While being a free nation; the U.S. still held many restrictions and prejudices against it citizens. Female citizens didn’t share many of the rights that male citizens were given especially when it came to voting. The idea had already come into fruition early on, but women could only do so much to get noticed and to be heard. 1848 was the year that this movement launched nationwide, which gave it some much needed publicity. Abolitionists Lucretia Mott and Elizabeth Cady Stanton stood at the forefront at a convention in Seneca Falls, New York; pushing and demanding for a women’s rights movement. This attention captured other activists such as Susan B. Anthony and the newly formed organization lobbied the U.S. Government for equal rights while raising public awareness. As many as 70 years had passed and with many ups & downs, this organization of activists finally won their hard fought battle with the passage of the 19th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution.

” Did You Know”

  • Married women weren’t allowed to own any property
  • Women had no claim to any money they earned
  • Nellie Tayloe Ross was Wyoming’s first female Governor
  • Women were excluded from politics and had to focus on motherhood and housework

The hard fought victory didn’t happen overnight and went through three decades of frustration known as the “Doldrums.” Much of the movement’s opposition came from southern states, but the activists pushed through and on May 21, 1919 it passed the House of Representatives. On June 4, 1919 it went before the Senate and finally was passed 56 ayes and 25 nays.

Presently in 2016, Hillary Rodham Clinton pushes ever so closely to becoming the president of the United States and is a perfect example of what this movement is. Women being able to vote and are now campaigning for political jobs, which is a major transformation of how things were nearly one hundred years ago.Throughout the 20th Century, women’s roles dramatically changed. Women were now receiving higher education, entering the workforce, and competing for jobs commonly held by men. In the U.S. alone; over 57% of women make-up the current job force. This goes to show that anything worth fighting for is definitely worth having.
